There are spoilers in this article.
In Fallout 4 you eventually meet the secretive group known as the Railroad and member and potential companion Deacon, who convinces Desdemona that you’re just the type of person the organisation needs. He also hints that he’s been watching you.
As it happens, he was spying on you, even before you left Vault 111.
When you exit the Vault you’ll find a chair overlooking the subterranean facility and, next to it, a Railroad symbol that means ‘ally’. This suggests that the Railroad, or at least Deacon and possibly P.A.M, knew of your existence and the possibility you would be released from cryosleep.
Upon arrival at Diamond City, you encounter Mayor McDonough arguing with Piper, another potential companion. One of the mayor’s security guards is actually Deacon in disguise and the Railroad operative comes with his very own unique dialogue options.
If you make your way to Goodneighbor, you may spot Deacon wandering the streets as a Drifter or relaxing in one of the pods in the Memory Den.
There’s also a caravan worker in Bunker Hill who looks pretty familiar for some reason.
Deacon, like most of the companions in Fallout 4, is more than he first seems and he’ll open up if you spend time with him and work on your approval rating.
If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already discovered the Railroad and Deacon, but if not, here’s our guide on following the Freedom Trail.
