When it comes to the DCEU as a whole, many people see wasted potential, due largely in part to interference by Warner Bros. This was very apparent in Zack Snyder’s films, David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, and Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey, a film that came out right before the pandemic. The latter still maintains a large group of supporters asking for a sequel, but they’re also happy about the prospect of the character Black Canary getting a spinoff film.
This was announced quite a while ago, and things still seem to be rolling forward. The writer of the film is Misha Green, who happens to be good friends with the actress behind Dinah Lance Jurnee Smollett, who, in a recent interview, teased how excited she is for this film.
“I’m just so incredibly excited about a number of things that I can’t talk about,” Smollett told us. “I mean, I’m excited, that’s what I can say. I’m excited about getting to explore a lot… I feel like we’ve only touched the surface with Black Canary. And she’s one of the dopest martial artists in the DC Universe. That is something that is a real challenge in my head that I’m just excited at the possibility of being able to explore deeper and further and wider and greater.”
Indeed, Dinah is one of the most beloved characters in DC Comics, and various properties have given her time to shine in her own way. With the DCEU still needing to find itself, a good movie like this one should be could tip the balance. Even if it’s just an HBO Max release at present.
If some are fearing a low-key movie, don’t. Smollett knows how good Misha Green is.
“Here’s the thing. Her imagination is BIG!”
