A reboot of the Tomb Raider film franchise has found its director in Norwegian director Roar Uthaug, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
According to the report, the reboot may pick up Geneva Robertson-Dworet as its latest writer. The Transformers 5 co-writer is reportedly in negotiations to pen the script. Previously, the film’s screenplay has been handled by Marti Nixon and Mark Fergus, Hawk Ostby, and, most recently, TMNT writer Evan Daugherty.
Uthaug has made a name for himself in Norway, having made horror film Cold Prey, children’s film Magic Silver, and survival action thriller Escape. Most recently, Uthaug made a disaster movie called Wave, in which a tsunami hits Norway.
No plot details have been released for the Tomb Raider reboot beyond that it will be a story about Lara Croft’s first adventure, a similar premise to the 2013 video game reboot.
Previous Tomb Raider films cast Angelina Jolie in the title role first in 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and then its sequel Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. The first film is the still the highest grossing video game to movie adaptation in the United States. The reboot will be made in partnership between GK Films, MGM, Warner Bros., and Square Enix.
In other video game movie adaptation news, the first trailer for Warcraft, the film based on the Blizzard Entertainment property of the same name, was released during BlizzCon, which also brought upon the release of the opening cinematic for World of Warcraft: Legion.
