If someone asked you what genre would be a good fit for Croteam's Serious Sam franchise, odds are good that "old school JRPG" probably wouldn't be high on your list. But that’s exactly what Serious Sam: The Random Encounter sets out to do.
The Random Encounter is another entry in Croteam's Serious Sam Indies series, which sees notable independent developers reimagining the shooter across a wide variety of classic genres.
This latest demake was headed up by the Dutch duo at Vlambeer, the folks behind beloved indie gem Super Crate Box. Strange as it sounds, The Random Encounter will bring turn-based, party-driven combat to the Serious Sam universe. Also included is an endless challenge mode, which lets you battle an endless stream of enemies for a spot on the high score board.
I have to admit, there’s a certain insane charm in imagining Sam and a horde of kamikazes patiently taking turns to fight each other. Sure, it’s no gunstacking, but it’s certainly an interesting experiment, and one I’m definitely looking forward to.
Serious Sam: The Random Encounter will be hitting Steam and other digital distribution platforms sometime in mid-October for the very reasonable price of $4.99.
