Metal Gear Online 3 has gone live, and along with it come a host of new features and improvements. Only one change is generating buzz, however, and for good reason. Konami is offering the crazy, possibly questionable, option to offer FOB insurance.
FOBs, or forward operating bases, augment your main base, giving you the opportunity to control more of the map. However, it also adds an online component, since players can infiltrate each other’s bases.
What the insurance does is let you keep the staff and materials other players take, so that they only get duplicates. This insurance does not cover staff and items when they are not fully yours, such as staff you’ve abducted, wounded staff, or nuclear weapons.
Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain already uses MB coins, an in-game currency you can buy with real world cash. These are the costs for the insurance in terms of MB coins:
- 50 coins – one day coverage
- 100 coins – three day coverage
- 200 coins – seven day coverage
- 300 coins – fourteen day coverage
The update also brings other changes, including:
· New Combat Deployment missions with higher value rewards
· New grade 7 weapons, including the S1000 AIR-S, HAIL MGR-4, and AM MRS-71 Rifle
· Night vision equipment for your FOB security
· Infiltrate FOBs without notifying rival players
· Pay to reduce FOB expansion time
· Increase in GMP and materials you can keep
· PF rating improvements
· Staff auto assign now prioritizes security team
· UI improvements
· Balance changes
On the side, if you have problems with connecting to other players, or just don’t want to intrude on other players, there will also be Event FOBs, which you can infiltrate and steal from without harming anyone.
Presumably, FOB insurance is a thing to keep fans happy, but how it works out to benefit players who can afford to regularly purchase the insurance, and for that matter, the community, is another matter entirely.
