Ubisoft has confirmed they did not make a story mode for Rainbow Six Siege.
Art director Scott Mitchell shared these statements on EGX 2015:
There is no story mode per se. You go through training, where you get to experience different operators and their devices. You can play against enemy AI in co-op through all the maps. You can customise matches, so that’s what we’re offering on the single-player side of things.
It’s a pretty good training ground, and on top or that you’re unlocking the same content as you would playing in PvP. You’re still gaining stars, reknown points, and new operatives.
It did appear like Ubisoft had plans for a deeper story for Rainbow Six Siege given the elaborate premise. While more and more developers seem to believe their online shooters don’t need a story, many fans are pushing back on this notion, even if the majority of gamers don’t end up playing story modes. Destiny, of course, had to famously bring a more fulfilling story with expansion The Taken King, and Nintendo received praise for insisting on a story mode for Splatoon, as comparatively small as it is.
