I’m pretty sure there are no gamers out there who haven’t dreamed of recreating their house or school in Counter-strike or Quake…right…RIGHT?!
“Yes that’s right!” Bellows 3D-Artist Graham Rust as he smashes upload on Youtube, sharing a video of his lovely living room recreated in 3D and relived through Half-Life Alyx.
It’s staggeringly detailed and downright awesome to see that someone has taken the time to create something like this. You can see trinkets on his desk, a photo booth, a painting, and a little miniature figure perched at the top of his shelf – the room looks very real.
“I 3D modeled my desk back in 2015 to use with the Oculus Devkit 2.” Said Rust when replying to a Youtube comment “When I decided to create the Alyx mod I started doing a model a day. It was a great way to learn Autodesk Maya”
All of the measurements fit perfectly in VR meaning there are no issues of the objects looking bigger or smaller than they actually are. He measured each object and then created a 3D Model in Maya. Textures he created using Substance Painter or Photoshop.
“I take a tape measure/ruler/caliper and measure the object, then use that to create a 3D model in Autodesk Maya and textures in Adobe Substance/Photoshop. I also create a simplified version of the model to use for physics. Finally, I import those into the Half-Life: Alyx mod editor and use their visual programming system to interact with the world.”
Rust is nowhere near done, he’s already installed an elevator and plans that in the future it will lead into an area with “multiple floors that look completely different but are still walkable within my living room.”
