Fast Racing NEO’s Sci Fi Premise Takes Its Tracks Into Overdrive

September 25, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

Shinen took the game into a direction cleanly distinct from the predecessors that inspired it,

Nintendo UK took it upon themselves to interview Shinen’s art director Martin Sauter about the highly anticipated Wii U exclusive 3D racer, FAST Racing Neo.

So, we already know FAST Racing Neo will push the system to its limits at 60 FPS, and we know single player and online modes are robust. However, it turns out that was not everything Shinen squeezed into the game, as you will see below.

Sauter described FAST Racing Neo as a science fiction game, but the way Shinen used this premise separates it cleanly from the predecessors that inspired it, WipeOut and F-Zero. Beyond the vague cyberpunk settings of those racers, FAST Racing Neo takes you to outer space, the clouds, lava, deserts, canyons, jungles, abandoned mines, etc across its 16 tracks.

The way these tracks break up, in fact, is more akin to Mario Kart 8. Sauter describes a  track where, well, the tracks break up, and give way to a stream of dangerous asteroids. Rather than stop abruptly, however, your vehicle can jump off and continue racing through the asteroids.

FAST Racing Neo is also broken up in ways that will allow you to choose how you play. You can collect orbs to build up a boost bar you can use anytime, and you can switch phases across several tracks by matching the color of the path. Some tracks break up, allowing you to choose one over the other. However, experienced players will want to test all these tracks to find the quickest paths, and perhaps some secrets along the way.

FAST Racing Neo is planned for release for this year exclusively on the Wii U eShop.
