Fallout 4: Todd Howard Talks Bethesda’s Philosophy in Making the Game

September 15, 2015 by Stephen Daly

“You rip apart the world, and then you can build what you want."

Bethesda has released a new blog post about Fallout 4 and while it doesn't give much away, it does offer some insight into how game director Todd Howard approached it.

“Let’s have our cake and ice cream,” is how Howard describes the fusion of the deep role-playing experience players expect with all-features shooter gameplay. This is all coupled with a wide number of stats and extensive customisation. Bethesda says this is part of their philosophy to "be who you want and play how you want."

“The more we can say yes to the player, the better we are,” Howard commented.

There's also some information on the game's crafting system. "Fallout 4 is all about customisation," Bethesda adds, pointing to the in-game settlement building feature via the Workshop, what they call their most advanced weapon crafting system to date, and PC and console modding.

In keeping with the "play how you want" ethos, almost all of this is optional but Bethesda says there are plenty of reasons to search the wasteland for components you can use. “You rip apart the world, and then you can build what you want,” Howard explained.

Fallout 4 launches November 10th for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
