In four months CD Projekt RED has finished releasing all of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s free DLC, and they hope they have set a good example to the industry.
CPR’s co-founder Marcin IwiÅ„ski shared this statement regarding the end of these releases:
I would really like to see such initiatives become an industry standard rather than an exception to the general rule.
I hope that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has set a good example.
CD Projekt RED isn’t the only developer that believes this, as Nintendo’s late CEO Satoru Iwata has shared similar sentiments. Even now, Splatoon’s series of free events and DLC releases are proving popular with fans, who are feeling rewarded for their purchase.
However, the two are still outliers compared to the rest of the industry, as across console and mobile gaming, developers have standardized and even become reliant on DLC and microtransactions. Of course, many individual and independent developers also feel the same regarding DLC, but as it is, it’s unlikely that we will see any dramatic change.
Do you think either CD Projekt RED or Nintendo make a solid case for free DLC? What else do you think should the industry see before they could make change happen? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
