In a cycle that the mainstream news media may not be seeing, King is now seeing declining revenues and profits, after some incredible months of exponential growth.
The developer is best known for Candy Crush Saga, a free to play matching three game originally released in 2012. The game saw its star rise in 2013, when it became the most downloaded game on iOS, and was still doing well around early 2014. By November of last year, revenue already started to dip, as the developer announced spinoff Candy Crush Soda.
Now, the developer reports revenue of $ 490 million, a dip of 18 percent year on year, as well as profits of $ 165 million, also a dip of 28 % year on year. The developer blames this squarely on its former profitmaker, Candy Crush Saga, as they describe the game as ‘maturing’ as revenue dips.
What about Candy Crush Soda? King claims it has performed well, leading to a rise in MAU and DAU metrics year on year. Obviously, that good performance was not enough to offset these losses, as Candy Crush Soda has not caught up to Candy Crush Saga’s scale.
