Sony has confirmed plans to raise prices for PlayStation Plus in UK.
While annual fees of 39.99 pounds, or $ 62.40, will remain the same, market forces have compelled Sony to raise the monthly fee of 5.49 pounds, or $ 8.57, and three month subscriptions of 11.99 pounds, or $ 18.71. Sony has yet to decide on final prices.
Sony can boast that the PlayStation 4 has as much as 90 per cent market share in Europe, but cannot avoid this price jump from happening. The situation merely serves to highlight how regional pricing affects individual gamers. Of course, regional pricing itself is touted as a boogeyman, but is only indicative of the real problem, the continuing difficulties in running a gaming business in different regions.
While GOGcom has notably pushed back against the trend of regional pricing, Steam and Sony may simply be too big and have too many games and developers under them to stop enforcing regional pricing. They simply have too many partners that can’t afford the fees and costs associated with bringing their games to different regions.
