Steven Spielberg is making a movie based on Ernest Cline's 2011 video game culture tribute book Ready Player One, and it's coming out on December 15, 2017.
In the book, which takes place in the year 2044, a virtual reality game creator puts his company up for grabs to the one player who finds an easter egg buried in one of the thousands of virtual worlds in his game. As with Cline's other recent book, Armada, Ready Player One is filled with pop-culture and video game references from the 1980s.
There are no casting details for Ready Player One just yet, but X-Men writer Zak Penn is expected to be writing the script for the movie. Penn and Cline had previously worked on Atari: Game Over last year.
"Any film from Steven Spielberg is an event film, so it felt right to date this thrilling new project from one of our greatest filmmakers for the holiday season," Warner Bros. executive Dan Fellman said.
The film is being produced at Warner Bros., Village Roadshow and Dreamworks.
