The Mad Max video game’s latest trailer shows us more of the Stronghold and the challenges that wait within, but perhaps just as importantly, reveal the game’s connection to the movies.
Does Griffa seem familiar? He has more than a passing resemblance to Bruce Spence, who played the gyro captain in Mad Max 2 and Jedediah in Mad Max 3. Subsequently, Gutgash’s character has a lot in common with Mad Max 2’s charismatic camp leader, Papagallo, and one of the bosses has more than a passing resemblance to Mad Max 2’s Lord Humongous. There’s even a cameo by Max’s late wife Jessie, albeit as a recurring faded memory.
Of course, this new Mad Max has War Boys (although biker gangs seem to exist in this universe too), led by Immortan Joe’s third son, Scabrous Scrotus. The trailer also apparently shows off several of the stronghold’s bosses, including Jeet, Gutgash, Pink Eye and Deep Friah.
Don’t expect Avalanche to definitively explain what connections the movies and the game have to each other. As George Miller, the franchise’s creator, has explained multiple times, he doesn’t care much for lore and establishing a canon, so much as telling a tight story. Still, the trailer hints at some deep lore.
What you can expect, of course, is a lot of action in Max’s V8 Interceptor, and possibly a bunch of other vehicles as well.
Mad Max will be released on September 1 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows. Check out some screenshots below and the trailer above.
