Project Cars developer Simply Mad Studios has confirmed that the crowdfunded game will not now be released on Wii U in a statement provided to Nintendo Life.
"The official line is that we're awaiting an announcement from Nintendo on new hardware," a spokesperson for the developer explained. "As of now Project Cars is simply too much for the Wii U."
There have been rumblings about the game's development on Wii U for some time now, with Slightly Mad admitting in February that they could only get the racer to run "at about 23fps".
"Honestly, unless we really cut the looks back I think we're looking to Nintendo's next console," studio head Ian Bell commented at the time.
"We still haven't given up on Wii U 100 per cent but if we can't make it work we will move to the next Nintendo machine."
It's likely that the game will never be released on a Nintendo platform, but its recently announced sequel may appear on the NX, which is due to be unveiled in 2016.
