Rovio Entertainment has officially revealed Angry Birds 2, promising to be bigger, badder, and birdier. The game is coming in July 30.
The game is actually something of a misnomer, as this is the 15th game in the series, following Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio, Angry Birds Friends, Angry Birds Space, Angry Birds Star Wars, Angry Birds Star Wars 2, Angry Birds Transformers, Angry Birds Go!, Angry Birds Epic, Angry Birds Fight!, Angry Birds Stella, Angry Birds Stella Pop!, Bad Piggies, and the upcoming Angry Birds Under Pigstruction.
If anything, the name change is likely to indicate change or addition in the game mechanics, which has remained unchanged for most of the spinoffs it’s generated.
Rovio is no longer the seemingly undefeatable monolith it was when Angry Birds first became a hit. It failed to make a genuine second IP hit with Amazing Alex, and it saw a considerable decrease in profit by the end of last year, to as much as 73 %.
In spite of this, Rovio is very much in the game, with the Angry Birds franchise having hit 3 billion downloads, and layering their original game business with merchandise and licensing. Their biggest non-game related project is the upcoming CG animated film of the same name, as well as an upcoming Angry Birds Lego toy deal.
