WWE 2K16 Cover Star Revealed: Stone Cold Steve Austin

July 6, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

The Rattlesnake is not an active competitor, but was granted this honor for the same reason Michael Jordan was NBA 2K11’s cover star.

2K Sports has revealed that Stone Cold Steve Austin will be the cover star of WWE 2K16.

Steve Austin is one of the biggest stars in the sport, cited by Jim Ross and Paul Heyman as the most profitable wrestler in the history of the WWE. Many consider him the biggest star in the sport.

Austin is a decorated and accomplished wrestler, earning 21 championships in his career, including the WWE’s World championship, Intercontinental championship, and tag team championship. This makes him one of the few WWE Triple Crown champions, and he has also won the King of the Ring tournament and several Royal Rumbles.

More than these championships, however, Austin was a pivotal figure during the Attitude era of wrestling in the late 90s to early 00s, and often considered its poster boy. He is most famous for engaging in feuds with WWE chairman Vince McMahon, playing the antiestablishment figure who wasn’t afraid of standing up to his boss.

Here and now, Austin has not wrestled for over a decade, and is currently signed with the WWE to a Legends contract. It seems 2K went with him for the same reasons they made Michael Jordan the cover star of NBA 2K11; to honor his accomplishments in the sport, without necessarily taking anything from the current stars.

Steve was eager to hype up some of the confirmed wrestlers for the game, including Seth Rollins, Daniel Bryan, Dean Ambrose, Paige, Bad News Barrett, but most especially, Finn Balor. Finn recently revealed he was doing motion capture for the game, but in his career, Finn just beat Kevin Owens to become the current NXT champion.

WWE 2K16 will be released on October 27, 2015, on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
