SCEE president Jim Ryan has told VG247 that the PS4 accounts for more than 90% of console market share in multiple European countries, with all countries in the region having at least a 70% PS4 market share.
“We have a very significant market leadership,” Ryan told the site at E3 earlier this month.
“Well, we have market leadership in every country in Europe, and have very significant market leadership in continental Europe. Extremely significant. I don’t think market-share’s any less than 70%, and frequently greater than 90% in continental Europe.”
Given the system's success and continued strong momemtum in the region, Sony feels no urge to reduce the system's price at present.
“Particularly in Europe… our momentum is still very considerable,” Ryan commented. “We’re happy with the price and we’re happy with the value proposition. Consumers, equally and more importantly, appear to he happy with the price and the value proposition. We’ll leave it where it is for now.”
It should be noted that while the PS4 was available throughout Europe from November 2013, Microsoft only released the Xbox One in six European countries initially (Ireland, the UK, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy). Most of the continent would not get their hands on the system until September 2014.
Even so, PlayStation has always performed particularly strongly in Europe and there's little reason to suspect that will change soon, especially on the continent. As of April, 22.3 million PS4s had been sold worldwide.
