Bethesda’s Pete Hines has revealed in a new interview that the company is shaping their mobile strategies thanks to the success of Fallout Shelter.
Along the way, Hines made a surprise revelation: it turns out they had mobile plans for quite some time already. They could have revealed and released Fallout Shelter before Fallout 4, but knew that if they did, the fans would be furious.
On another end, they did not expect Fallout Shelter to be as successful as it was upon launch. They hadn’t planned it to go toe to toe with games like Clash of Clans, but the game has managed to stay in App Annie’s list of top 10 grossing iOS games.
Bethesda already has another mobile game on the way, CCG Elder Scrolls Legends. Unlike Fallout Shelter, Bethesda is limiting Elder Scrolls Legends’ launch with a closed beta that will slowly ramp up into a full beta, and finally, release.
Bethesda was not really opposed to entering mobile. Pete explains their late entry was merely a matter of them coming up with good, unique ideas, and waiting for the right time to release them.
Whereas Fallout Shelter is a promotional tie-in, however, future Bethesda mobile games will be conceived of entirely for mobile audiences. The company has no set mobile strategy right now. Rather, they rely on their studios to come up with their own ideas for mobile games, that they really believe in.
