Take Two Interactive has registered web omains for Mafia 3, implying that a new game in the series is coming soon.
The Mafia games are the domain of 2K Czech, originally known as Illusion Softworks. Much like the Grand Theft Auto games, they are set in an open world where you play through driving and shooting segments, as your character lives out a life in the criminal underworld. Unlike Grand Theft Auto, Mafia hews closely to Rockstar’s inspiration in the Italian mafia. Much like a Mario Puzo novel, the two Mafia games take grand dramatic narrative twists intended to pack an emotional punch.
If you’re not familiar with Mafia, that’s because the last game was released in 2010. In fact, 2K Czech hasn’t had anything credited to their name since Top Spin 4, which was released in 2011. While it’s likely they had other projects in the meantime (perhaps they helped work on Grand Theft Auto 4?), it’s been too long since we’ve seen a new project from them.
Perhaps part of the reason for this as well is that each Mafia game released in a different console generation, with the last one taking longer than expected. Considering Take Two owns both Mafia and Grand Theft Auto, they were likely careful to plan out releases in such a way that they did not conflict with each other.
