Shiro Games has shown off brand-new gameplay of their upcoming RTS set in Frank Herbert’s Dune Universe.
Looking closely at the gameplay trailer, it seems that Dune: Spice Wars will be a sandbox RTS 4X game. You’re tasked with going around the desert planet of Arrakis, one huge map, that requires you to scavenge for resources, create living quarters and figure out how to win the greatest supply of Spice, the drug that Arrakis is known for among the galactic civilizations and the reason why so many people try to claim land there.
You can also take multiple paths to victory here, using stealth, political knowledge and manipulation, taking control of the economy en masse or going all out war on the inhabitants of the planet. Caution is recommended, regardless of which of these approaches you take, since you’ll find yourself at the mercy of the massive Sandworms that inhabit the planet and make life a living hell for anybody who dares to try to take their planet as their own.
Dune: Spice Wars was revealed last year at The Game Awards 2021. It follows from the critically acclaimed and academy award-nominated Denis Villenueve feature film last year, and is currently slated to launch in early access at some point this year. Four factions will be available at launch, including House Harkonnen and House Atreides, but more are expected in the coming months, as is a single-player campaign and multiplayer.
