Bethesda Details Why This Was the Year for an E3 Showcase

June 25, 2015 by Michael Fossbakk

No word on if Bethesda has similar plans for next year’s E3.

Last week’s E3 was the first to feature a press conference from Fallout 4 developer Bethesda Game Studios. Why this year was the year to do it was because Bethesda felt it had a lineup worthy of its own spotlight, according to Bethesda’s vice president of PR and marketing Pete Hines in an interview with The Telegraph.

“If we’re going to do a showcase, we’re going to do it our way. No celebrities involved, no famous people coming up there,” Hines said.

“We’re not going to use lots of buzzwords or jargon or put up our growth charts for you or whatever. We’re here to talk about games — so here’s one, here’s another, here’s another, here’s another and we’re done. Have a good night.”

At previous E3s, it has been common for Bethesda to have an appearance, but never a full blown press conference. So, why not just have a booth to showcase its games as the publisher has done in previous years?

“It felt like more than we could accomplish in a booth,” Hines said. “More importantly, no matter what we do in our booth, we only get a subset of people that attend E3. I’m not sure what the attendance is this year but let’s say 40,000. There’s no way we’re getting 40,000 people to our booth to see everything. You’re lucky to get four.

“So part of it was if we do have this line up and feel good about it we need to do it in a way that everybody can see it whether they’re here or not. Anybody who wants to can see what we have to show about Fallout 4. There’s no mystery, we’re not trying to hide anything or exclude people. Whether it’s press or retail or fans or whomever.”

During its press conference at E3 2015, Bethesda premiered not just the much-anticipated Fallout 4, but also the next entry in the Doom franchise, as well as Dishonored 2, a follow-up to 2012’s Dishonored.

Fallout 4 will be available November 10, 2015 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Check out the full interview with Hines here.
