Are you hoping to play Dragon Quest 7 for 3DS? We may have an encouraging sign that it is coming to the West.
A fansub group assembled to make their own English localization, but they received a cease and desist order from Square Enix. Of course, as is usually the case with the fansub community, they have opted to drop the project immediately.
Now, in most cases, when fan translations receives cease and desist orders, this is because the developer is planning on localizing the game themselves. If a fan translation does exist, it can adversely affect potential sales of the game, so they don’t want the overlap.
However, there is a wrench in the works that may put this all up in the air. The fansub team was planning to reuse some translations from the PlayStation version of the game. So, it’s possible that the cease and desist order was issued just for this reason.
The PlayStation original was released in North America in 2001, and the 3DS version in Japan only in 2013. Android and iOS versions of the games are also coming, so it’s also possible that Square is releasing the game in the West under those platforms.
Other than this, of course, this also raises questions about a more recent 3DS remake,Dragon Quest 8. Dragon Quest 8 is certainly the bigger bombshell if it does get translated. It looks to be the definitive version of the game, adding new heroes and campaigns. Dragon Quest 8 was released in iOS and Android last year, and will be coming to Japan for 3DS this August 27, 2015.
