Some of you might recall that Microsoft’s working relationship with independent developer Darkside Games ended when the Phantom Dust reboot project was apparently shut down. A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that the project is “still in development,” and new production images emerged.
Speculations arose as to how the project would continue, as Microsoft did not mention any particular studio as Darkside’s replacement. It was possible that they had already chosen a studio, but were opting to keep silent about it for the time being. It seems though that they didn’t have a successor lined up for the project at all.
When asked during a recent interview about what’s going with Phantom Dust, Xbox Head of Game Marketing Aaron Greenberg says, “It’s been a passion project for Phil and a lot of folks on the team, and we’re currently exploring what we’re gonna do longer term with Phantom Dust. The project is not cancelled, but we don’t have an active developer on it right now.”
That sounds like fans will have to wait a little longer to get the reboot of the popular action strategy video game. Phantom Dust is set to be an Xbox One exclusive, and there’s currently no release window, official or unofficial. As Greenberg said, “It’s a project that, like many things, will take a little more time.” We hope to get more updates on it soon.
