Take-Two has announced during its latest earnings call that Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition has “significantly outperformed their commercial expectations.” That is despite the massive backlash that the collection received across social media when it was released. The GTA Trilogy received one of the biggest backlashes from gamers in recent memory. However, that doesn’t seem to have affected the financial performance of the game.
Take-Two also provided updated information about Grand Theft Auto franchise sales. The franchise as a whole has now sold over 370 million copies. Grand Theft Auto V has continued to extend its lead as the biggest entertainment product ever. The game has now sold over 160 million copies which is an increase of 5 million over the last quarter.
Take-Two didn’t provide exact numbers for the GTA Trilogy however its possible to deduce how many copies were sold. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition has likely sold in the region of 10 million copies since it was released. The 370 million total number provide by Take-Two is a 15 million increase over the previous quarter. GTA V is responsible for 5 million of those copies and older GTA games don’t sell many copies. Therefore the GTA Trilogy should be sitting at around or above 10 million copies sold thus far. Evidently, Grand Theft Auto is too big to be seriously affected by the negative reaction from gamers.
Take-Two also reported that it expects to break financial records in the next couple of years because of games it has in the pipeline. Since GTA V is the biggest entertainment product ever, surely only GTA VI could beat those kinds of records for the company. Take-Two recently announced that the next GTA game is currently in production but it didn’t provide any further details. Perhaps an official unveiling is around the corner.
