Are you excited to play The Last Guardian next year? Unfortunately, it may be time to temper your expectations already.
Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed in an interview that what we saw of The Last Guardian in Sony’s E3 event was video, and not actually gameplay, although it certainly looked like it. He did have a good explanation for this choice.
Basically, they went with video for time constraints. The game revolves around the Tricot’s AI. However, Sony had to factor in the unpredictability of an AI and recognized it may not due what they want it to do. Rather than have to deal with the risk the game won’t work properly, they opted to show a video of what gameplay will feel like.
Yoshida had another bombshell to drop, however. It turns out they are not 100 % sure the game will release in 2016, although they gave this release date. This time, the issue revolves around the transfer from PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4. The move was necessary given how the industry has already shifted dramatically from seventh to eight generation consoles. However, Sony Japan Studio and Team Ico essentially had to start from scratch.
Yoshida says development is going well, so they had confidence in dropping a release date. Ultimately, however, The Last Guardian may still take later to release, and it may look different than what we have seen.
