Were you concerned about Konami’s plans to use more strategies from mobile games to their other products? If this rumor holds true, it’s already started.
The Italian PlayStation Network listing for Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain has a listing for “Acquisti in-game opzionali”. This translates to optional in-game purchases. In other words, the game will have microtransactions.
To be clear, Konami’s statement regarding mobile was widely misinterpreted, so Konami had to reexplain and even rescind it. They aren’t abandoning consoles for mobile, but rather will keep on releasing games for their most famous IPs, and also add mobile to their strategy when they can.
In specific, as new president Hideki Hayakawa explains, rather than focus on gearing individual games for niches, they are paying more attention at market trends to inform how they offer their products and services.
We don’t know yet how microtransactions will be implemented in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. Hayakawa did explain that they have found customers in Japan are eager to buy microtransactions, for both their mobile and AAA titles.
We also don’t know how much input Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima has in these microtransactions. For all we know, it might even be his idea.
