Some people might be surprised to find out that Mickey Mouse had an older half-brother. His name is Oswald, and he’s pretty jealous of Mickey. Sounds like he’d make a pretty good villain.
Walt Disney had collaborated with animator Ub Iwerks and created Oswald the Lucky Rabbit as a project for Universal Pictures in the 1920s. Disney wanted to negotiate a bigger cut, but ultimately gave up the project, and left Oswald with Universal. He then created Mickey Mouse, who eventually eclipsed Oswald’s popularity. Nearly 80 years after Walt left Universal, Oswald became the intellectual property of Disney once again.
You can probably tell at this point that Oswald would likely never fight alongside Mickey, just because Mickey “stole” his popularity from him. Sounds like a very Disney-type villain in the making, don’t you think? Plenty of people seem to think so, judging by the amount of fan art that places Oswald in the Kingdom Hearts universe.
YouTuber TheGamersJoint is on board with this possibility, and presents a couple of theories on how Oswald would fit right into Kingdom Hearts 3:
He could round out a trio.Trios have been a recurring theme in the Kingdom Hearts games. We have Ventus/Aqua/Terra, Sora/Riku/Kairi, and Roxas/Xion/Axel. Currently, only Maleficent and Pete have teamed up. Let’s face it, Pete’s pretty incompetent as a minion, so Maleficent should consider getting someone more competent and with more determination. Who could be better than Oswald? Having the loving attention of the viewing public stolen from him and eventually being forgotten seem like motivation enough to join forces with the villains. He already sounds capable of more evil than most Disney villains.
He could be Mickey’s Nobody. Nobodies are essentially what’s left when a person loses their heart to Darkness. What if at some point, Mickey had fallen into Darkness but somehow recovered? In the recovery process , he had no idea he’d managed to create a Nobody in the form of Oswald. It’s admittedly a bit of a stretch, but it would be pretty cool to see a Disney character have a Nobody.
These are pretty cool ideas, and the first idea definitely sounds like something that could logically happen. Would you want to see Oswald in KH3, or do you want to see other characters? E3 is nearing and we’re hoping that Square Enix gives us big Kingdom Hearts 3 updates.
