Square Enix has just revealed a new game called Figureheads, and it looks like a mecha + shooter + strategy mashup.
Figureheads is set in a post-apocalyptic world where meteor fragments have made the surface of the earth unsuitable for human habitation, which has forced the population to live underground. To manage the surface from underground, unmanned robots called “2Foot” were developed at a rapid rate.
The younger members of the population got bored with their new life, and took an interest in using these robots to fight in a competition called “BOTgame.” This competition quickly gained a reputation and evolved into a major entertainment industry, regulated by the World 2Foot BOTgame Federation (W2BF).
In the game, two teams of five bots each are pitted against each other. The graphics in the battle are pretty good, with the bots looking fairly realistic, and everything looks like it goes together. There’s one slightly jarring detail, though: The trailer alludes to the pilots being drawn up in the stereotypical bright anime style. It looks a bit out of place right now, but maybe it will make sense when we get more detailed updates in the future.
Figureheads will be an online free-to-play strategic shooter exclusively for PC, scheduled for release within the year.
