We Happy Few is a Procedural Game About Paranoia

June 4, 2015 by Ian Miles Cheong

We Happy Few is on Kickstarter now.

Compulsion Games has launched its crowdfunding initiative for its new game We Happy Few through Kickstarter today. It's a procedural game about paranoia and suspicion. Interested yet?

In We Happy Few, everyone but the game is high on a drug called Joy and they aren't fond of Downers. The player's task is to find a way to escape the eerie city of Wellington Wells and make their way to freedom, all the while avoiding those high on Joy.

To get an early access build of the game, you have to pledge $60 CAD. There's a full scope of rewards and stretch goals that the developers are aiming for with We Happy Few.

At 12:30pm Eastern today, Compulsion will be showcasing the game on Twitch.tv, so be sure to check that out if you're interested.

Here's what the game is set to feature:

A procedurally generated world: Each time you die or beat the game, your next adventure through Wellington Wells will be different. Forget about relying on the city's layout to escape!

A sophisticated suspicion system: The inhabitants of Wellington Wells expect you to behave in very specific ways—if they suspect you’re not taking your Joy, they'll quickly identify you as a Downer.

Frenzied combat: Downers aren’t very popular in Wellington Wells. In fact, Wellies tend to get a bit violent whenever one walks by.

Twisted survival mechanics: In this urban setting, avoiding the Wellies' fury often means hiding in plain sight.

An elaborate crafting system: Salvage supplies and Joy-tainted food to stay alive, but be careful not to overdose!

Disclosure: I backed the game at the $25 tier.
