Genshin Impact has blown past the competition to become the most-viewed subreddit of 2021 according to this year’s Reddit recap. Given how massive Reddit is–with over 100,000 active communities and 366 million posts in 2021 alone–this is quite a feat, especially given that the title is just over one year old. Amassing such a dedicated community in such a short amount of time is something MiHoYo should be proud of, and it will be interesting to see what the free-to-play title is about to achieve in 2022.
According to the numbers, Genshin Impact came out on top in the sphere of Reddit’s game communities, closely followed by League of Legends. The general /r/gaming was in third place, followed by /r/rpclipsgta, a place for sharing clips from the popular Rockstar entry Grand Theft Auto V. Rounding out the top five, unsurprisingly, is the Final Fantasy XIV subreddit, seeing an explosive year after the release of the Endwalker expansion and the mass exodus from World of Warcraft to the Square Enix MMO. (This post sums that situation up pretty well, and was the fifth most-upvoted gaming community comment for 2021).
Genshin Impact‘s top spot is curious given that the subreddit only currently has around 46,700 subscribers. For context, the League of Legends subreddit has over 5.6 million, while Final Fantasy XIV has over 672,000. This would imply that the mobile game has a much more diverse player base than most major titles, with many active players jumping onto Reddit for quick tips and memes rather than dedicating a large amount of time to contribute to the community itself.
Genshin Impact is currently available to play on Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and mobile devices. It was initially released in late 2020, meaning that 2021 was the first full year for the blossoming title. It is set to release on the Nintendo Switch at some point in the near future. In the game’s first year of release, it has grossed $2 billion worldwide.
