The 1990s PC-based exploration puzzle series Myst is back, and this time in an entirely different format. In what Deadline refers to as a "competitive situation", Hulu has acquired and committed to a script from Legendary Television based on the game, penned by Divergent writer Evan Daughtery and producer Matt Tolmach, of The Amazing Spider-Man and Sinister Six fame.
The series is said to be focused on the origins of the mysterious system of islands at the center of Myst, where the Stranger awakes and finds himself at the beginning of the game. Given the rich but irresistable enigma that is Myst and its sequels, the show will likely have plenty of material to work with. The script is said to have been developed by the writing team at Legendary Television and that writer Evan Daughtery had taken a particular interest in working on the project. It joins a number of other new shows debuting on Hulu as the content streaming company seeks to compete with Netflix and Amazon Instant Video in original programming.
Personally, I'm intrigued by this development, even as I'm wary of how poorly video games adapt to TV and movies. Myst was among the first video games I ever played, and to this day my blood still runs cold when I hear "Bring me the red pages." What do you think of this new turn of events in the Myst series?
