We have no details on what this is for now, including platforms and planned release dates. However, I can assure you of one thing; this is not a direct reference to the series that begat Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear. Those games, Metal Gear, Snake’s Revenge, and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, were released for the MSX2 and NES on 1987 and 1990, years after 1984.

So, if this likely has nothing to do with the MSX2/NES games, than what could Metal Gear Solid: The 1984 Collection be about? It might be a reference to the George Orwell novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, a dystopian novel about an overly powerful superstate that controls private lives. Hideo Kojima has gone on record that Metal Gear Solid 5 will have in Orwellian themes, and is actually set in the year 1984.

The logo and effects used on it seem to be a swipe atFar Cry Blood Dragon, so Konami may be hinting at a similar treatment on whatever this collection will be of.

My best guess is this is a remastered collection of the Metal Gear Solid games, with a Far Cry Blood Dragon treatment. The games will have the same cheesy retro futuristic aesthetics and themes, and even the use of the same bright colors, reminiscent of watching movies on VHS or Betamax.

Of course, as many fans also noticed, Hideo Kojima is conspicuous in his absence in the credits. This does not necessarily mean he is not involved in this project, however.

What do you hope Metal Gear Solid: The 1984 Collection will be? What do you think it will actually be? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
