Michael Fassbender has spoken a bit about the upcoming production of Fox’sAssassin’s Creed film, which he is co-producing and starring in. If you’re expecting more details, however, you may be disappointed.
Fassbender tempered expectations that the movie has even already started production, pointing out that it takes time to develop a script and work on them. He did share that the movie is scheduled to start production this year, and filming itself will start in September.
Fassbender is similarly quiet about the role he will be taking. When asked point blank if he was playing Desmond Miles, the lead character from the recent Assassin’s Creed Unity, Fassbender merely said not to listen to rumors.
Ultimately, Fassbender stated that the challenge was taking the dense lore of Assassin’s Creed and break it down in the service of a film adaptation. The ultimate goal is to make it a simple story, and everyone involved wants to make sure they get it right, so there is no impetus to rush into it.
For Ubisoft, the stakes are higher than they anticipated when they first approached Fox with the project. While Assassin’s Creed Unity was a sales success, the critical reception and controversy following the game’s poor launch means Ubisoft needs to save face. The upcoming Assassin’s Creed Victory is one way of doing so, but hardcore and mainstream fans alike will forget the controversy if the film becomes a huge hit.
