Sonic is an iconic video game franchise. With the game being around since the days of the Sega Genesis, we’ve seen all sorts of installments released. In addition, there have been mainline releases and a slew of spin-offs. However, there’s been plenty of ups and downs as well with the franchise. Fortunately, for retro Sonic fans, we received a callback to the series roots. The Sonic Mania installment was such a big hit that both old and new fans enjoyed the game. Although, we have been waiting for a sequel announcement to come out.
Sonic Mania was released back in 2017, and while it has a following, we might not see a new installment. A new report going out online suggests Sega has decided to pull the plug on a Sonic Mania 2. At least, it looks like the developers behind the project won’t be working on it going forward. The source of this report comes from industry insider Zippo. According to the report, it looks like there was a rift between Sega along the development studio Evening Star Studios.
We don’t know what caused the split, but now it looks like Sega is no longer moving forward with the sequel. Of course, a sequel may come out from another studio down the road if this report proves to be accurate. Although, that is likely bummer news for fans. The Sonic Mania game was a huge hit as it took the gameplay back to its side-scrolling 2D platformer.
With all that said, we still have the first installment, Sonic Mania, readily available. The game launched back in 2017. Players can pick up Sonic Mania on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC platforms. If you want a bit more insight into the game, then check out our Before You Buy coverage in the video embedded above.
