Layton 7 Will Bring Back Professor Layton And Luke, But In A Card Game

April 7, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

Curiously enough, Level 5 CEO Akihiro Hino had expressed interest in bringing the game, not to the 3DS, but the Wii U.

Level 5 has revealed in a livestream today that Professor Layton and his assistant Luke are returning for Layton 7.

The Professor Layton series of puzzle adventure games were popularized on the Nintendo DS, and have also made their way to 3DS, Android and iOS. These games focus on the adventures of Professor Hershel Layton, an archaeologist that travels around the world to solve baffling mysteries.

The games ostensibly play out as a point and click adventure game, where you spend a lot of time exploring towns and meeting townspeople, and solving the brain puzzles they give you. Progressing at certain parts of the game requires solving specific puzzles, finding certain areas, or earning a number of picarats from the puzzles.

Layton and Luke did not seem to be coming back for Layton 7. In fact, Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy was promoted as Professor Layton’s final adventure. Previews for Layton 7 similarly hinted at the London resident’s non-presence, as Level 5 revealed a perplexing seven playable characters, including a dog.

Level  5 also revealed that Layton 7 will be taking the form of a card game. The game has been confirmed for iOS and Android so far. Curiously enough, Level 5 CEO Akihiro Hino had expressed interest in bringing the game, not to the 3DS, but the Wii U. Hino wants gamers to experience its stylus based gameplay in the living room.

Whatever the case, the real question in Professor Layton fans is if we will see an extension of Layton’s story. Will this game continue from Azran Legacy, or is it set in the middle of the timeline or in an alternate universe?

Will you play Layton 7 knowing the professor is back, or would you like to hear more? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
