Nintendo has shared two trailers for two upcoming Fire Emblem games in today’s Direct: Fire Emblem If for 3DS, and Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem for Wii U.
The official unveiling of Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem, a dream collaboration between Sega’s Atlus and Nintendo’s Intelligent Systems, somehow took fans by surprise, mostly over how radio silent the two companies had been until now. Following the convention of Shin Megami Tensei and Persona games, SMT X FE features characters leading double lives, in a real world that looks very much like our own, and another world where they battle out of this world creatures. It also looks to figure classic characters from both franchises. More details remain forthcoming, but of course, this game is for Wii U.
Fire Emblem If introduces a new core gameplay concept that promises to tear players apart. Your player character is torn between two kingdoms, having been born to the Hoshido Clan, but raised by the Nohr clan. This character is the lead of this narrative, and can be made male or female. If you choose to play as the Hoshido, you can expect the traditional Fire Emblem experience, with a modicum of difficulty and the same old ‘vanquish the evil’ tropes. However, playing the ambitious Nohr faction introduces a more complex narrative and a harder game, as you work to undo Nohr’s evil from within, but cannot avoid conflict with your birth relatives.
The Japanese Nintendo Direct revealed that Fire Emblem If will actually be two games, coded white and black for each faction, respectively. Hopefully, Nintendo offers a digital discount for one of the games to get the other, or perhaps a special single package for New Nintendo 3DS?
What do you hope from the two Fire Emblem games? Feel free to share your thoughts with us in the comments.
