Nintendo President and CEO Satoru Iwata spoke to TIME about a number of different things, but most importantly, the Wii U's price. He explains why here:
“I think, to be honest, we were in a difficult situation,” says Iwata. “Because for the home console our biggest market opportunity was in the overseas markets in the U.S. and Europe, but because of the valuation of the yen and the exchange rates into dollars and euro, it made it a difficult proposition for us to capitalize on that, because of the cost that we were forced to sell the system at.”
This revelation clears up a number of different things, including the Wii U's tough road to finding traction with gamers. The system is a solid one, but many find it hard to justify the $299.99 price tag. The console's offerings are not that expansive, though they are quickly growing.
Iwata also discussed the rumors circulating regarding a Netflix Zelda series. He said that the original article published by The Wall Street Journal used incorrect information in announcing the show's existence.
“As of now, I have nothing new to share with you in regard to the use of our IPs for any TV shows or films, but I can at least confirm that the article in question is not based on correct information,” says Iwata.
