Itagaki has flatly denied rumors that Devil’s Third will be coming to Steam.
This follows a recent listing of the game popping up on Steam, under the name Devil’s Third Online. Notes indicate that cross region gifting and trading have been subsequently disabled.
Some fans connect this listing to an earlier rumor that the game was being ported by Korean studio Doobic. This rumor did come up long before the game was confirmed to be a Wii U exclusive. Itagaki simply denied the rumor on his personal Facebook, without commenting on the earlier Doobic story.
Devil’s Third was originally to be published by THQ, in the works since 2009 and slated for release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. And then, three years ago, the game was dropped by THQ, months before they themselves went out of business.
Within that time, development of the game hit a huge snag as the company making the engine they were using went out of business. Itagaki said that at the time THQ reverted rights back to Valhalla, they were at the final, most expensive point in development. Itagaki was open to bringing the game to more platforms, including PC, before the announcement it became a Wii U exclusive.
Itagaki credits Nintendo with streamlining the final 10 % of the game, even as 90 % of the game’s vision was retained. It meant running into cultural differences between the two companies, but Itagaki says he and everyone at Valhalla learned from their collaboration with the House of Mario. With all this in mind, it's highly unlikely that Valhalla would deviate from plans to release exclusively to Wii U.
Devil’s Third will be coming to Wii U sometime between this year and 2016.
