Bloodborne Story Trailer Sets The Stage For A Gothic Adventure

February 19, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

The Assistant’s strangely familiar words hint at a larger plot than we have been told so far.

The latest trailer for Bloodborne sets the stage for the game’s story. This trailer comes to us courtesy of IGN, via Gematsu.

Sony shares this description:

Face your fears as you search for answers in the ancient city of Yharnam, now cursed with a strange endemic illness spreading through the streets like wildfire. Danger, death and madness lurk around every corner of this dark and horrific world, and you must discover its darkest secrets in order to survive.

The trailer is punctuated by narration from Gehrman and the Assistant, and also features other previously revealed characters, including Priest Gacoigne, in human and transformed forms.

If you were still thinking of the game as Dark Souls in a different setting, this trailer may convince you otherwise. As is par for the course with Sony games, it gives off a very cinematic feel, in this case that of a visually arresting black and white horror flick, like Haxan or The Phantom Carriage.

The trailer also sets aside a lot of the admittedly heavy backstory and narrows it down to a good old fashioned, atmospheric feel.

The Assistant’s words (the Assistant is the girl in the trailer, still unnamed and unidentified) also hint her strange feelings of familiarity and affinity for the Hunter. As we know him for now, there is no indication that the Hunter is any kind of hero. He is simply the protagonist, driven to strike at the infested/haunted inhabitants of Yharnam, and seemingly more for self interest than some honorable intent.

Of course, this may mean there are more plot twists to come for the game down the line, including something that could redefine the Hunter’s quest entirely from when we first embark upon it.

What do you think the Assistant’s words mean? Is she friend or foe? Are you her friend, or something more, or something less? Share your ideas with us in the comments.

Bloodborne will be releasing on PlayStation 4 on March 24.
