Shields are the one thing that will save your life in Dark Souls and its sequel, and they are (thankfully) making a return in the PS4-exclusive game by From Software, Bloodborne.
However, due to the game’s faster combat pace, don’t expect to use shields to work in the same way as they did in previous games. You won’t be able to just stand around and block attacks if you expect to survive in Bloodborne.
As we reported yesterday, Sony Japan Studio producer Masaaki Yamagiwa stated that players will have to incorporate the shield into your strategy for it to be effective.
“If you’re always standing back and guarding, you’ll die very quickly,” said the producer in an interview with IGN. “So you have to incorporate it into your strategy of how you play and fight.
“We wanted to encourage players to not hide and wait, but instead be more aggressive and pro-active in battle.”
Hey, at least we now know for certain that shields will be included in the game, especially after months of wondering whether they would be.
Given the game's less sluggish, and faster paced combat I'd imagine that shields would be used in an offensive capability, much as the Crusader's shield is in Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls, in contrast to their use in Dark Souls.
Bloodborne is set for a March release on the PlayStation 4.
