LGBT media advocacy group GLAAD has awarded a Special Recognition prize to BioWare's Dragon Age: Inquisition in recognition of the game's "many complex and unique LGBT characters prominently integrated throughout the game."
In December, characters Iron Bull, Sera, Dorian, and Krem were all included in GLAAD's list of 2014's Most Intriguing LGBT Characters.
"For nearly 30 years, the GLAAD Media Awards have raised the bar for inclusion in news and entertainment, transforming LGBT representation in media and moving the dial for acceptance across the globe," GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis commented.
"It's been a remarkable year for equality, and nowhere is that more evident than in the visibility LGBT people have gained across media. This year's nominees, including expanded categories in Outstanding Comedy and Drama Series, reflect the widening diversity of LGBT images and storylines that are closing the gap to full acceptance."
The GLAAD Media Awards doesn't currently have a category for games, and explained the Special Recognition award was reserved for "outstanding media projects for which there is not a competitive category."
GLAAD has previously hailed the character of Bill in Naughty Dog's The Last of Us and has now showered praise on Ellie and her relationship with Riley in the Left Behind DLC as well with the group commenting:
"Though Ellie had previously mentioned the best friend she lost, Left Behind reveals that in their final days together, Ellie also confessed her true feelings for Riley after learning they would soon be separated, which Riley reciprocated. These scenes between them deepened Ellie's story even further and made the survivor's guilt she expresses later in the story all the more poignant. With a big-budget film adaptation in the works and a highly anticipated-sequel planned for 2016, Ellie is primed to become the most famous LGBT character in gaming."
The Imitation Game, Game of Thrones, and Modern Family are among the TV shows and movies which were nominated.
