League of Legends was the most popular game on Twitch during the fourth quarter of 2014, market research firm EEDAR has revealed to GamesIndustry.
Just five games made up 61 per cent of Twitch streams during the period, with League of Legends on top by a wide margin (26%), followed by Dota 2 (12%), Hearthstone (9%), Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (9%), and World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor (5%).
"While Twitch is becoming a more diverse content channel, the top multiplayer games that have strong eSports communities and operate as an ongoing game as a service (GaaS) drive a large percentage of the overall traffic," EEDAR's Patrick Walker commented.
"Interestingly, while League of Legends has almost double the share of Twitch view volume as Dota 2, Dota 2 over-indexes compared to the overall size of the respective games, as League of Legends has approximately seven times the monthly active users as Dota 2 (70 million compared to 10 million)," Walker added.
"This is likely driven by Twitch being a primarily Western Market product and by Dota 2 having a higher percentage of users that are interested in competitive play (League of Legends is considered the more accessible of the two games)."
It seems the secret to making a popular Twitch game is to develop a MOBA or be Blizzard.
The full report has some fascinating insights into Twitch, which is still a relatively recent phenomenon being founded in 2011. Last year, Amazon acquired the site.
