Turtle Rock Studios has revealed theEvolve season pass, as well as a new monster for the game, the Behemoth. They have also broken down each digital edition, and the thinking behind DLC in general.
Behemoth is the largest and most dangerous monster in the island. He cannot jump, but he has the most armor, the most health, and the most power. He is also the slowest, but he can strike enemies from a terrible distance with his shattering lava bombs, snatch a hunter from afar with his tongue, and easily build up walls of rock to protect himself or block off hunters from specific areas. He can even create huge fissures around him, making it near impossible to even get to him.
Now, the not so great news. The Behemoth on his own is $ 14.99. You can get better value buying him as part of the bundles, but it’s hard to see even a monster this big justifying one-fourths the cost of a retail game.
Turtle Rock explains their rationale for DLC is that they want each purchase to add significant value to the game. And so, they pitch that the base game comes with 12 maps, 12 hunters, and 3 monsters, and that any future maps will be free forever.
However, Turtle Rock seems determined to convince consumers to invest big in the game, touting game value. Here are the multiple digital editions and DLC packages you can get for Evolve.
If you preorder the game on Xbox One, you get:
· the base game
· Monster Expansion Pack [Savage Goliath Skin at launch, Behemoth when available]
· some retailer exclusives if you buy from that retailer
Note that Turtle Rock promises to share more details on preorder exclusives for PC and PS4 in the future.
If you get the Digital Deluxe Version, for $ 79.99 you get:
· the base game
· Hunting Season Pass [4 new Hunters when available, 3 Monster skins at launch]
· Monster Expansion Pack [Savage Goliath Skin at launch, Behemoth when available]
· some retailer exclusives if you buy from that retailer
You can also buy the Hunting Season Pass separately, for $ 24.99, to get these:
· 4 new Hunters when available
· 3 Monster skins at launch: Magma Goliath, Magma Wraith, Magma Kraken
Finally, there is the ill-named Evolve PC Monster Race Edition. For $ 99, you get all these:
· the base game
· Hunting Season Pass [4 new Hunters when available, 3 Monster skins at launch]
· Monster Expansion Pack [Savage Goliath Skin at launch, Behemoth when available]
· Unannounced Fifth Monster in evelopment
· Two more unannounced Hunters
· Four exclusive Monster skins
Ultimately, one wonders if Turtle Rock could sell these DLC elements separately at more reasonable prices. While guaranteeing free maps is a shrewd move, some players could miss out on other aspects, such as playing against DLC monsters. If this is not the case, Turtle Rock needs to make that clarification.
