Beamdog Software, developers and owners of the Baldur’s Gate series, have revealed they are releasing an entirely new game in the franchise, and have an additional project.
The developer has been prolific, if a little under the radar, with a new game released every year since 2011:
· MDK2 Wii, 2011
· MDK2 HD, 2012
· Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition, 2012
· Baldur’s Gate 2: Enhanced Edition, 2013
· Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition, 2014
Beamdog has clarified that the new game is not going to be Baldur’s Gate 3. Instead, it is what is best described as an interquel, happening between the events of the first two Baldur’s Gate games. They had been referring to this game as Adventure Y up until now. Beamdog explains that Adventure Y will see gamers going into caves and exploring the Sword Coast.
Beamdog also has an Adventure Z planned, a complete departure from their prior work. They even allude to the game containing sharks, but aren’t sharing more details until later in the year.
Lastly, Beamdog makes it clear that there are currently no plans for a Baldur’s Gate 3, or a game based on Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition at the moment. With all the work that they’re up to, this should not be much of a surprise.
