Seaman Sequel From Digital Devolver? CEO Asks Around On Twitter

January 5, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

Devolver CEO Fork Parker wants to know what it will take for them to make the game themselves.

Devolver Digital wants 2015 to be really interesting. They are publicly making inquiries regarding making a sequel to Seaman.

To be specific, Devolver CEO Fork Parker publicly asked the Sega account regarding making the game on Twitter. He then inquired with the game’s creator, Yoot Saito, and managed to get far enough to negotiate a smartphone and PC release.

Seaman is a groundbreaking virtual pet simulation game, published on the Dreamcast in 1999, and then on PlayStation 2 on 2001. You hatch and raise the eponymous Seaman, who has a troublingly human face (actually mapped from Yoot Saito) and often acerbic tone. English speaking users got to enjoy the voice work of Leonard Nimoy narrating the game for you.

The game also received a less known sequel on PlayStation 2, which shifts into god game territory.  Beyond merely talking to the Seaman, you get to change the environment around it as well, and in doing so, you are able to give them certain items.

To be truthful, many things about the game have not aged well, in particular the repetitive nature of engaging the Seaman AI, which was advanced for its time but is woefully dated now. Vivarium’s output has been Nintendo exclusive since Seaman, with the last game being Aero Porter, part of 2012’s Guild01 collection.

Would you like Yoot Saito to work on Seaman now? If you are a longtime fan, what would you like to see carry over, and what should be fixed? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
