Akalabeth: World of Doom, Richard Garriott’s forerunner to the Ultima series and modern RPGs, will be among GOG.com’s permanent collection of free games from today, December 24th.
To mark the occasion, all games in the Ultima series will be 80% off for 48 hours. Akalabeth was created 35 years ago by Garriott for the Apple II personal computer. While originally created solely for his own entertainment, Garriott was convinced by a friend to try selling the game, which he copied onto disks before placing them into ziplock bags complete with instruction cards.
When released, Akalabeth used cutting-edge tech – Garriott's previous games needed an acoustic moden and paper tape punch/reader.
The Ultima promotion runs until Friday, December 26, at 09:59 CET/08:59 GMT/03:59 EST. Akalabeth: World of Doom will be available for PC, Mac, and Linux.
