No sooner did we learn that Nintendo has been kicking around the idea of a new Mario movie than Variety reports on Sega's plans to bring more of its properties to film, television, and other entertainment platforms. Sega does what Nintendoes, in this case!
Former Break Media producer Evan Cholfin is now the head of development and production at Stories International, a collaboration between Sega and ad agency Hakuhodo DY Group to adapt brands from Sega's vast library. Sonic the Hedgehog may have been given preferential treatment with multiple cartoon programs over the years, including Sonic Boom currently on air, but how would you like to see live-action or animated versions of Altered Beast, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Rise of Nightmares, and Crazy Taxi? Those happen to be the properties that Stories is currently moving ahead with — Virtua Fighter and Golden Axe could be next.
Everything is still in the early stages, and there is plenty that can either go right or wrong before we so much as catch a glimpse of evidence of progress. For now, it seems that Sega is serious about growing their brands. Hopefully this isn't a dead end.
