Sekai Project have a Kickstarter that you may be intimately interested in, that’s already reached its initial funding goal and can be taken in any direction from here. CLANNAD has now been confirmed for an English localization via Steam, with funding ongoing until January 10, 2015.
CLANNAD is a now decade old visual novel involving a delinquent student who moves into a new high school. He befriends and helps resolve the problems of five young girls in the same school, in the service of reviving the school’s drama club, to help a friend out.
CLANNAD has a slice of life theme, and it can be divisive among visual novel and anime fans, but it has a huge following in Japan and the West. Fans cite its branching storylines as the game’s big hook, for being touching and relatable. The game’s name itself comes from the Irish word for family, describing one of the game’s main themes.
CLANNAD was a bestseller in Japan upon release, and received ports to PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360, Android, and Japanese mobile phones. Sekai Project actually picked up the license for the game last August 23, in partnership with Japanese studio VisualArt’s.
Now, after only a few days, Sekai’s Kickstarter has already raised $ 218,686 of its $ 140,000 base goal. Immediately in the vicinity are plans to use the enhanced PlayStation 3 assets for the Steam port. Sekai also revealed that they wanted to prioritize Steam for the crowdfund, but were open to porting to other platforms if they reached more funds, which they seem likely to do.
Are you a hardcore CLANNAD fan, or do you know people who are? What platforms would you like to see CLANNAD released on? What else would you like to see Sekai do through this crowdfund, which will run until January 10, 2015? Share your thoughts in the comments. In the meantime, pledge for your own copy here.
