Far Cry 4 developer Alex Hutchinson has made interesting comments regarding resolutions in video games.
His game, Far Cry 4, will run in 1080p on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Furthermore, you can have it running in 4K if you get it for a powerful enough PC.
Still, Alex thinks 1080p is not that huge a selling point for games. He argues that gamers don’t go into a pixel graphics retro game and worry about it. Rather, they will be thinking if the game is interesting, fun, new, or fresh.
Alex goes one step further, and addresses the underlying implication of any 1080p questions/statements. As he puts it, some gamers are of the belief that having games at a higher resolution is a huge selling point for a game. In fact, this has not been true for some time now.
Alex’s statements hold water when you look at the history of seventh generation consoles. Of course, the Wii and its games outsold its competitors, but even taking that out of the question, many multiplats in that generation sold more on Xbox 360 even when you could get better resolutions on PlayStation 3 or PC.
The opposite may seem true in the eight generation, with PlayStation 4 seeing higher sales of multiplats compared to other platforms. However, Alex argues that even if it seems that way, it really isn’t the case.

Far Cry 4 will be released on November 18 on Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
